Malaysian Info. Minister and a radio station try to gag press freedom

Dec.6, 2007, Kualalumpur:

Information Minister Datuk Seri Zainuddin Maidin today reminded the local media not to become tools of "bad" elements for spreading rumours which could tarnish the country's image.

He said the media, particularly newspapers, should continue with its role of disseminating 'accurate and truthful information' and not to succumb to emotions.

"Newspapers should not spread rumours and become tools of bad elements by helping them in tarnishing the country's image overseas," he told reporters.

"Newspapers have a responsibility to the country, so please correct news which are laced with emotion. We must be able to pick news which are rational. This is what is important now."

Zainuddin was commenting on a Tamil newspaper report claiming that Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) had sacked seven Minnal FM announcers for attending the illegal gathering organised by the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) on Nov 25. (Bernama)
