Kuala Lumpur, Jan 15 (IANS) The lawyer for the five detained leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Front (Hindraf) whose appeals are to come up before an advisory board has sought adjournment till Feb 12.
Lawmaker Karpal Singh, who is leading the defence of the five jailed for two years under the stringent Internal Security Act (ISA), did not give reasons for his move, reported the New Straits Times.
The advisory board, headed by a judge, was to deliberate on the internal security ministry's reasons for the detention of the five Hindraf leaders - P. Uthayakumar, Ganabatirau, K. Kengadharan, Vasantha Kumar and Rajendran.
Besides the five, 31 others who participated in a Nov 25 protest rally are being prosecuted for threatening peace.
Hindraf has alleged socio-economic discrimination of ethnic Indians, predominantly Tamil Hindus, and destruction of their temples.
Hindraf chairperson P. Waithyamurthy, who is currently in London, has also said that unauthorised individuals have been collecting money in their name but not channelling it to the organisation.
In a statement, he said the funds were meant to aid the five detained Hindraf leaders.
