Govt. supports ban on Hindraf's business licence
Govt supports ban on Hindraf’s business licence
11 December, 2007 (New Strait Times)
MUAR: The government supports the action by the Companies Commission of Malaysia to annul Hindraf’s business licence after it was revealed that the company had used its revenue to fund illegal activities. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said the commission, which is under the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, was acting within its jurisdiction as provided by the law.
The commission issued a press statement on Friday that the business licence of Hindraf Enterprise, which is linked to the Hindu Rights Action Force, had been annulled.
The action was taken against the company due to its links to activities carried out by Hindraf, which were deemed not conducive to national security and public safety.
The statement said the action to annul the company’s licence was carried out under Section 5C(2) of the Companies Registration Act 1956.
Abdullah said that Hindraf was not a registered society and there was no need for the government to ban the movement.
“What we are doing at present is to monitor their activities closely.”
He said although there was evidence that Hindraf leaders were canvassing support at the international level, there was no plan to revoke the members’ or leaders’ passports.
“Malaysians are free citizens. They are allowed to to travel to any country they wish.
“We will not revoke their international passports, unless they are charged with or convicted of a criminal offence,” he said at SMK Tengku Mahkota Parit Raja here yesterday.
He said this in response to the suggestion made by Agriculture and Agro-based Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin in his speech to ban Hindraf.
At the opening ceremony of Sri Pekembar Umno Complex in Pagoh yesterday, Muhyiddin had called for Hindraf to be banned due to its slanderous and seditious agenda.
“Hindraf is irresponsible, un-Malaysian and cannot be allowed to act in a swashbuckling manner.
“They will disrupt racial harmony in this country.”
