DMK meet seeks equal rights for Malaysian Tamils

Tirunelveli (PTI), Dec. 16, 2007: The Youth wing conference of the DMK being held here asked the Centre to take appropriate action to enable Indian Tamils in Malaysia secure 'equal rights' as enjoyed by other communities there.

A resolution adopted at the conference said the DMK approached the Centre for appropriate action whenever Tamils living abroad were affected.

It said when some 'unfortunate incidents' occurred in the recent past and when Malaysian Tamils agitated for their rights, DMK chief and state Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had asked the Centre in a "non-controversial manner" to look into their grievances and take up the matter with the Malaysian Government.

Karunanidhi had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue. A Malaysian Minister, however, took strong exception to Karunanidhi's remarks.

Another resolution adopted at the conference asked the Centre to provide reservation for minorities at All India level. The Centre should amend the constitution for this purpose, it said.
